At salvage yards, vehicles are valued by their tonnage and how much they weigh when totally stripped of fixtures and accessories.
The weight is then multiplied with the scrap metal rate, and the owner is promptly paid in cash.
If you have a junk vehicle you’re thinking of trading in for cash, however, it is important that you know that there are car parts and accessories, that bring in a couple extra bucks apart from the scrap metal price.
You can remove these components and sell them to an auto repair shop before going to the salvage yard, or you can sell it separately at the yard. Here are the benefits of taking your junk car to an auto wrecker.
This is a list of the most valuable auto parts at salvage yards:
One of the most valuable components that can be salvaged in a vehicle is a working stereo; this is why car robbers break into parked or junk vehicles to steal them. If your junk vehicle still has a functional stereo, strongly consider taking it out and selling it to an auto repair shop close to you. Salvage yards buy car stereos along with junk cars, but you may not get as good an offer as you will get at a body shop.
B.- GPS System
These days, people hardly ever use the GPS in their cars anymore, they prefer to use the apps on their smartphones. However, there are vehicles that are equipped with all-in-one stereo and sat-nav GPS systems. If you have one of those, you are in luck, and are due a windfall when you visit a salvage yard with your vehicle. If you do not, you can still make a tidy profit by selling the in-built GPS on its own.
C.- Air Bags
Unused airbags are choice items at auto repair shops and salvage yards. If you are selling an old vehicle that has not been in accident, there is a high likelihood that the air bags have not been deployed and you will make a couple extra hundred bucks. As a matter of fact, even if your vehicle was wrecked in a crash, as long as the air bags are still intact, you can make good cash from selling them.
D.- Air Conditioning Systems
If you have ever been in a car without air conditioning when it is hot out, you will definitely appreciate how important it is to vehicle owners. Because it is so important, used car ACs and compressors in perfect working conditions fetch a good price at salvage yards.
E.- Catalytic Converters
Oftentimes the biggest targets of car thieves, catalytic converters have been a priced item for more than 15 years, and they remain valuable still. The reason for this is: they contain lots of precious metals e.g. platinum, rhodium, or palladium.
F.- Fenders and Bumpers
Fenders are important not just because they serve as protection for the wheel wells and a car’s undercarriage, but also because they are every vehicle’s first line of defence, and as a result, are very prone to damage. Add this to the fact that some cars have inter-connected fenders and bumpers. This means a fender that needs to be replaced requires the owner to buy the fender/bumper set. For this reason, car owners prefer to buy used fenders or bumpers to replace damaged ones, increasing the part’s value.
When you think of a vehicle’s door, it is easy to think of it as one component, but it is more than that. Every car door has sheet metal, lock and unlock buttons, window controls, and in case of the driver’s seat door, mirror controls. This means that, if all are functional, there are lots of parts to sell.
H.- Wheels, Tires and Rims
Aluminium wheels are the pick of the bunch, but other wheels, tires, and rims in good conditions can add to the cash you are due to take home from the salvage yard.
I.- Engine Oil and Oil Filters
These parts do not bring in the big bucks, but they have some value. Engine oil never becomes totally useless; it just gets worn out. If you take it to a recycling plant, you can make some money off it. Same with oil filters, all you have to do is remove the oil, clean the filter and refurbish it. Do all these, and you can get good cash for it at a salvage yard.
Tailgates, on their own, are low-value items. If you have a custom-made tailgate, however, you can make some extra buck by selling them at a body shop or a salvage yard.
K.- Wiper Arms
Like the tailgates and the oil filters above, windshield wiper arms are not premium parts, but they have some value at salvage yards. If your car is a later model and is from a reputable brand, the value of your wipers increases, albeit, just a little.
